To satisfy consumer demand for quality and design, today's textile
and apparel industries are as concerned with science and technology
as with fashion. Florida State University's leading-edge programs
in textiles and consumer sciences are preparing students to pursue
careers in every aspect of these growing industries from research
and development to production and merchandising.
We design our programs to be challenging and our curriculum emphasizes
application of scientific and technical knowledge and theory.
At the same time, we help students develop a professional understanding
of consumer environments and economics. Students are eligible
to enter TCS when they have met the University requirements for
transfer to an upper-division program, including an overall GPA
of 2.0 and completion of all math requirements. A separate application
to the department is not required.
The Department's Honors Program
invites selected juniors and seniors to participate in independent
studies with faculty members who are specialists in their chosen
field.
Supervised internships enable students in every major to apply
their knowledge and learn new hands-on skills. Internships are
required in the merchandising program, but are optional
for the other majors. The long list of current internship opportunities
for our students includes major producers, retailers, and service organizations.
We are proud of our diverse and accomplished faculty. What they
share is a solid commitment to teaching excellence and a reputation
for first-rate scholarship. Our course offerings take full advantage
of their wide-ranging interest and outstanding expertise.
All students are assigned a faculty adviser. The role of the adviser
is to help make each student's academic career a positive experience.
Faculty doors are open, and students are encouraged to seek guidance
and help with academic concerns.
Graduates of our programs have gone on to become successful in
a wide variety of careers including buyers and planners, vendor
representatives and sales directors, teachers and researchers,
apparel designers, product developers and merchandisers, and property
managers, to name a few. With their solid academic and technical
grounding, graduates are prepared for the job market or to enter
graduate programs in numerous areas of Human Sciences, including
Merchandising, Apparel Studies, and Textiles.
