The Department of Textiles & Consumer Sciences (TCS) has approximately
800 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled each semester
who are served by fourteen outstanding teaching and research faculty
who help create a challenging academic environment. Team projects,
computer projects, field trips and invited speakers are a regular
part of the Department’s learning environment. TCS has strong
relationships with the retailing and merchandising
industries, appropriate government agencies, and trade organizations,
which provide leading-edge instructional opportunities through
Department sponsored lectures and seminars.
The Department’s Undergraduate Program offers Bachelor of
Science degrees through three majors, Apparel Design and Technology,
Merchandising and Textiles. . These stimulating areas of study
allow the student to combine an interest in business, art, science,
and/or technology with direct, practical application to the design,
distribution, merchandising and/or management of fashion products,
and other consumer goods and services.
Graduate Programs in the Department provide students the opportunity
to obtain both Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy
(Ph.D.) degrees. Graduate programs enable students to pursue advanced
study in their selected areas of emphasis.
An excellent teaching and research faculty provide students with
a challenging academic environment. Due to their strong commitment
to the personal and professional development of students, the
faculty provide individual academic advising for every student.
The Department’s resources include leading-edge technology
for each program.
- Lectra Computer-Aided
Design (CAD) Laboratory - includes 20 computer-aided
design (CAD) workstations that put students on the leading-edge
of fashion and fabric design, pattern making and grading, and
marker making. Computer skills are essential to today’s
apparel and retailing industries.
- Apparel Assembly Laboratory
- has 20 workstations where students physically assemble their
work. The lab gives students hands-on exposure to apparel manufacturing
techniques.
- Burdines Merchandising
Laboratory - provides hands-on experience with the latest
in merchandise presentations utilizing various retail fixtures.
The lab also has six computer workstations, which help students
understand inventory control technology and buying strategies
via software.
- Chemical and Physical
Textile Laboratories - allows for modern chemical and
physical testing with computerized testing equipment and includes
a conditioning room, sensory evaluation laboratory, and a data
color computer system.
- Historic Clothing and
Textiles Laboratory - has a teaching and
study collection of historic clothing dating from the early
1800s. The historical textiles collection includes the unique
Carter Collection of pre-Columbian Peruvian textiles from the
late 1400s.
To supplement classroom learning, student organizations
provide opportunities to develop leadership skills in professional
settings. TCS students have the opportunity to join. Fashion Incorporated,
the Collegiate Merchandising Association, the American Association
of Textile Chemists and Colorists Student Chapter and Student Ambassadors.
