The Department of Nutrition, Food and Exercise Sciences (NFES) offers two degrees at the master's level: Exercise Physiology; and Nutrition and Food Science. The combination of these respective areas within a single department facilitates integrative studies between diet and physical activity in the maintenance of health and the prevention and treatment of chronic disease states, as well as studies on the quality and safety of food. A Dietetic Internship program is available under the Nutrition and Food Science major.
Thesis and non-thesis options are available for the programs in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition and Food Science. Non-thesis programs include additional coursework as well as comprehensive examinations.

Requirements
Minimum Admission Standards
- GPA of at least 3.0 or combined score of 1000 (verbal + quantitative) on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
- International students must have a TOEFL score of at least 570 (paper-based), 230 (computer-based) or 80 (internet-based)
- For the Nutrition and Food Science programs, students should document grades of C or better in undergraduate general and organic chemistry courses. Additionally, students interested in the Food Science option should demonstrate mastery of microbiology and food science at the undergraduate level.
- For the Exercise Physiology program, students must have satisfactory grades of C or better in undergraduate anatomy and physiology laboratory courses
Attainment of these minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to the program. Admission decisions are based on assessments of all aspects of the student’s application materials. We reserve the right to increase standards if warranted by enrollment limitations and by the number and quality of applicants.

- Letter of Intent describing your interests, goals, and background. We encourage you to familiarize yourself with the research interests of the faculty in your area so that your letter can specifically address the faculty member(s) with whom you would be interested in working.
- Three letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak directly to your ability to complete academic work and/or research
Departmental Application deadlines:
For a Master's Degree in Nutrition:
- Fall Graduate Admission: while applicants are encouraged to submit their online application for Fall by March 1 for full consideration, the final date for submission of applications is July 1.
- Spring Graduate Admission: while applicants are encouraged to submit their online application for Spring by July 1 for full consideration, the final date for submission of applications is November 1.
- Graduate Dietetic Internship: students who are interested in the Clinical Nutrition Program must be accepted into one of the master's programs in the Department before their application can be evaluated for the internship. Thus, students interested in the clinical internship program should submit their application by January 15 of each year.
- Fellowships and Assistantships: the Department, College and the University both are for competitive scholarships and assistantships that carry stipends and tuition waivers. Students who wish to be considered for one of these awards are encouraged to submit their application for admission by February 1st.
