The Department of Nutrition, Food and Exercise Sciences (NFES) is in a unique position nationwide to provide graduate coursework and research opportunities in human nutrition, food science, and exercise physiology. The combination of these respective areas of concentration within a single department facilitates integrative studies between diet and physical activity in the maintenance of health and the prevention and treatment of chronic disease states, as well as studies on the quality and safety of food.
Thesis and nonthesis options are available for the master�s program in Nutrition and Food Science and for the Exercise Physiology concentration of the master�s program in Movement Sciences. Nonthesis programs include additional coursework as well as comprehensive examinations.

- An application must include a letter of intent describing your interests, goals, and background. This is a very important part of your application. Before writing this letter, we encourage you to familiarize yourself with the research interests of the faculty in your area so that your letter can specifically address which faculty members you would be interested in working with.
- A grade point average of at least 3.0 (two copies of official transcripts required) or a combined GRE (verbal + quantitative) score of at least 1000. All students must submit GRE and transcripts regardless of GPA or GRE scores.
- International students must have a TOEFL score of at least 570 (paper-based), 230 (computer-based) or 80 (internet-based).
- Three letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak directly to your ability to complete academic work and/or research. Letters should be sent by the recommenders directly to the department:

- Students interested in any of our graduate programs in Nutrition must have satisfactory grades in General Chemistry and at least one semester of Organic Chemistry before submitting an application.
- Students interested in the Master�s Program in Exercise Physiology need to have satisfactory grades in Functional Anatomy and Physiology with laboratory.
- Students interested in the Master�s Program in Food Science should have satisfactory grades in General and Organic Chemistry, Microbiology and Food Science.

For a Master's Degree in Nutrition:
- Fall Graduate Admission: while applicants are encouraged to submit their online application for by March 1 for full consideration, the final date for submission of application is July 1.
- Spring Graduate Admission: while applicants are encouraged to submit their online application for by July 1 for full consideration, the final date for submission of application is November 1.
- Graduate Dietetic Internship: students who are interested in the Clinical Nutrition Program must be accepted into one of the master�s programs in the Department before their application can be evaluated for the internship. Thus, students interested in the clinical internship program should submit their application by January 15 of each year.
- Fellowships and Assistantships: the Department, College and the University both are for competitive scholarships and assistantships that carry stipends and tuition waivers. Students who wish to be considered for one of these awards are encouraged to submit their application for admission by February 1st.
