College of Human Sciences
  • Established in 1905 as part of the Florida State College for Women
  • Considered the flagship program in Human Sciences in Florida
  • Consistently ranked as one of the top 15 programs in the Human Sciences nationally in terms of grants and contracts, undergraduate and gradate enrollment, degrees granted and total endowment
  • Ranks third nationally in the number of minority students at the undergraduate level and ninth at the graduate level

Department of Family and Child Sciences:

  • Programs emphasize the health and development of children and families through education, research and service to the community.
  • Professional opportunities in this field have increased due to new opportunities that have arisen as a result of the national focus on the welfare of families and children and a national and state shortage of family and consumer sciences teachers.
  • Programs in the Department are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT).
  • Students may complete requirements to become a certified Family Life Education, sponsored by the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR). Also students majoring in family and consumer sciences education receive teacher certification from the state of Florida.


Department of Nutrition, Food and Exercise Sciences:

  • Programs contribute to the prevention of chronic disease through the conduct of applied and basic research and through strong teaching programs.
  • Professional opportunities in nutrition, food and exercise sciences have increased due to the national interest in healthy living.
  • The Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) and the Dietetic Internship are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE).
  • The undergraduate Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) has a 76% internship placement rate and a 93% pass rate on the Registered Dietitian (R.D.) exam.
  • Graduates of the post-baccalaureate Dietetic Internship Program have a 97% pass rate on the R.D. exam.
  • The Florida State University Athletic Training/Sports Medicine Education Program has been officially awarded candidacy by the Joint Review Committee on Athletic Training (JRC-AT) and is making application for national accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). JRC-AT candidacy does not guarantee nor indicate CAAHEP accreditation status.


Department of Textiles and Consumer Sciences:

  • Programs address physical, behavioral and economic factors influencing apparel/textile product development, retail merchandising and residential environments. The curriculum emphasizes the application of the best business practices and knowledge of human behavior to the successful development and management of apparel and residential products.
  • The Merchandising program consistently places 90% or more of its graduates in executive level positions with retail firms.
  • The Apparel Design and Technology and Merchandising programs are among the largest in student enrollment in the country.

FCS - child care specialist, child life specialist, county extension agent, agency administrator, family life educator, middle and high school educator, adult educator, and professor

NFES - dietitian, sports nutritionist, athletic trainer, physical therapist, physician’s assistant, professor, medical doctor, chiropractor, industry research and development specialist, and professor

TCS - store manager, buyer, planner, merchandiser, marketing director, sales director, apparel designer, product developer, vendor representative, teacher, researcher, and professor
